How To Boil Whole Potatoes Using an Instant Pot
- Cooking time: 15 minutes
- Pressurizing time: 8 minutes
- Resting time: 5 minutes
- Total time: 28 minutes
Ingredients
For Double recipe - Serves 1 to 8
(6-Quart or Larger Instant Pot)
Potatoes:
- 1 to 8 russet potatoes of similar size
Water:
Trivet:
- 1 trivet or steamer basket
Instructions
-
Pick russet potatoes that are all about the same size so that they cook evenly.
- Scrub the skin of the potato to remove any dirt.
- Pierce potato with a sharp fork or knife approximately 4 times across all sides. This will prevent the potato from exploding while cooking.
- Add 1 cup of cold water the the Instant Pot.
- Insert the trivet or a steaming basket in the bottom of the Instant Pot.
- Place the potatoes on top of the trivet, stacking on top of one another if necessary. The trivet will prevent the potatoes from getting soggy and mushy.
- Close and lock lid.
- Check to make sure the steam release handle points to "Sealing".
- Press the "Manual" or "Pressure Cook" button and set the timer based on the size of the potato.
- Small Russets (6 to 8 ounces): 12 minutes
- Medium Russets (8 to 10 ounces): 15 minutes
- Large Russets (12 to 15 ounces): 20 minutes
- Note that it may take 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to come up to pressure before it sets the countdown timer.
- Allow the cooker to cool down naturally until the float valve drops down. This can take up to 10 minutes.
- Carefully unlock and remove the pressure cooker lid.
- Using tongs or large spoon, carefully remove the potatoes from the Instant Pot.
Comments
Try to choose russet potatoes that are all approximately similar in size.If you are using a 6-quart or larger Instant Pot I would not recommend cooking more than 8 potatoes at a time. If potatoes are extra large in size cook no more than 6 at a time.
Cooked and cubed potatoes can be refrigerated and used for Creamy potato salad or, fried in butter until crisp and served for breakfast with eggs and bacon.
Is your Instant Pot taking a long time to build up pressure? Is there a lot of steam leaking from the lid? Is there an unusual amount of water in the condensation collector? What can you do?
Check Your Sealing Ring Periodically:
Step One: Check to make sure the sealing ring is installed correctly. If it is installed correctly then see next step.
Step Two: Replace sealing ring as it may be damaged or worn out.
